The Mary Day was a welcome sight in the harbor this morning as we prepared to go out to haul our traps for the day. It was the first schooner I have seen this year and marks the beginning of the summer sailing season.
The schooner fleet consists of 13 tall ships ranging from 46' to 132'  with the capacity to carry from 6 to 40 guests and from 2 to 10 crew members. Several of these ships are National Historic Landmarks! The fleet sails out of Rockland, Rockport and Camden and travels along the scenic Maine coast visiting many of Maine's over 3000 islands.
Passengers may be involved in the ship's operations or may choose to just sit back relax. Meals aboard ship are served family style and consist of wonderful home cooking. A lobster bake on a Maine island is, of course, included as part of the vacation package.

These are just two of the beautiful spots I view as I go about my everyday business. The top photo is of the Fine Sand Beach noted for it's sugary, fine sand that feels so good between the toes.

The traps we hauled today were all inshore. It was a beautiful day to be on the water, until, of course, the bait arrived. The fog spread it's gray phantasmal fingers in through the Eastern Way of Burnt Coat Harbor, so we spent the afternoon hauling in the gloom.

These were taken in Burnt Coat Harbor. The bait boat, Double Eagle, made it's first trip today and it brought with it fresh bait's constant companion which is called fog.

The garden is coming along nicely now. The fence is almost completed and plants are going in.

The project continues with more fencing being put up and an arbor being put together. We will probably put the arbor inside of the garden to keep the deer from chewing up the climbing roses. It will look odd, but the roses, I hope, will offset the location of the arbor.

The garden project continues! The fence is beginning to be put in place by my husband and his friend, Steve Joy. My husband is the one on the tractor.

We put in a few hours today on our garden project making raised bed boxes. They will need to be leveled, placed in the final position and filled. We worked until we ran out of screws! The hardest part of the job is carrying them over and putting them in place. Oh, my aching back!

The garden project continues! Pictured here is material for raised beds and some for fencing. The raised bed material is actually composite decking. I think it will work well and I found an incredible deal on the stuff at Home Depot. They were discontinuing the color so it was 60% off! You can see that some of the composite material has been pre- cut to the proper length for the raised beds. My husband is doing this to make the assembly go quicker when he gets ready to do it. The feature that sold me on the composite material (besides the great deal) was the fact that there will be no maintenance!

Pictured here: rolls of garden wire, raised bed material for the high bush blueberries,top soil, composted manure and peat moss. We are awaiting a truck load of composted material and upon completion of the raised beds, we will be ready to begin planting. We also picked up a lovely arbor to put as the garden entrance. We still need a few more items to pull that together. We are hoping to plant climbing rose bushes to go up the arbor and are leaning toward a variety called New Dawn. They are very disease resistant and nearly impossible to kill even for me. We are trying to decide whether to add a garden path out of either pavers or slate.

This begins phase two of our new garden project. The very rocky and unlevel ground must be built up and leveled for the raised beds to sit properly.

Why didn't I take my camera to work today? I could have gotten some great pictures of wild looking waves. We went down into some of them and couldn't see land anywhere around us. It was awesome!

Since we were probably the only nuts out there today from the island, the seagulls were especially happy to see us. I feed them the leftover bait from the baitbags I take off. One gull gave me a token of his appreciation. It hit my right shoulder with a splat and slowly ran down my sleeve until it finally reached my wrist. I just had to laugh. It reminded me of life in general. Sometimes no matter how nice you try to be to some people that's the thanks you get!

This is a new project. We hope it turns into a lovely garden, but right now it looks more like a rock garden!
