The Artificial Eyeball Salesman

Austin Attleboro lived in Seattle where he worked in a bookstore that sold not only books, but also coffee in all sorts of flavors. The aromas from the many freshly brewed pots of coffee were almost intoxicating to Austin who was a coffee connoisseur. Because of his great knowledge of coffees, he was placed at the coffee bar each day. While he loved the job, especially since he had no qualms about the affordable price, he did get a little bored with it.

His real passion in life was his after-hours job. Every evening after sunset, he left his small apartment to pedal artificial eyeballs to owners of one-eyed cats. He was pleasantly surprised to learn that there was a great demand for them because most one-eyed cats needed another eye. One-eyed cat owners seemed embarrassed by their cat’s problem and were willing to pay exorbitant prices to rectify the situation.

Austin worked every neighborhood going door to door with a suitcase crammed with artificial cat eyeballs. For reasons he had trouble understanding, many doors were slammed in his face. Occasionally people even called the cops because they mistakenly thought the eyeballs were real and that he’d harvested them from live cats. They refused to believe his explanations and professions of innocence. Austin couldn’t understand it, but he always left before the cops arrived.

Usually, though, he found folks more than willing to cough up large sums of dough for these eyeballs and before long he was making so much money that he quit his day job. The eyeballs came with a full three year warranty package. It was a great selling point. Of course, the installation did pose a problem. Austin sold a booklet with instructions for an extra two hundred dollars, but almost no one understood them because they were written in Mandarin Chinese. The sale of these booklets was extremely low even though the illustrations were stunning. Most people opted to take the eyeballs and tape them to their cat’s head because they were only buying them for show anyway.

One fateful evening, Austin Attleboro met his doom. He knocked on the wrong door. It was opened by a large Italian man who had strong ties to the Mafia. When he saw Austin’s suitcase containing his artificial eyeballs, he went berserk. He was convinced that Austin was a hit man sent to rub him out for deeds he’d done against the Mafia boss in Chicago several years earlier. He grabbed Austin’s display case and managed to pop open the latches. Eyeballs flew all over the floor and the big man screamed in horror. He thought they were from other people Austin had been commissioned to kill. He gripped Austin by the neck with his big ham-like hands and began to squeeze. That was the end of Austin.

There were a lot of unhappy one-eyed cats and one-eyed cat owners in Seattle after his demise. As far as I know, no one has ever taken over this position. Maybe this is your dream job. With so many people out of work, I know someone will, no doubt, fill this void. There’s a lot of money to be made in this line of work, if you’re willing to accept the risk.

Pumpkin Trees

If pumpkins hung on the trees each fall,

It’d be more colorful after all,

And when we looked up at God’s blue sky,

We would always think of pumpkin pie.

When the leaves fall off it is time to rake,

And pick up pumpkins to make a cake,

For the pumpkins will drop to the ground.

Don’t stand below as they fall down.

It would be an unpleasant event,

If a pumpkin caused your head to dent.

Give the falling pumpkins a wide berth,

Then gather them up for all your worth.

In spring we could tap the pumpkin trees,

And make pumpkin syrup if we please.

We’d pour it on flapjacks and French toast.

Drizzled on ice cream we’d love it most.

This is without a doubt a sweet dream,

Because pumpkin trees I’ve never seen.

I don’t know why this dream cannot be,

And why pumpkins cannot grow on trees.

Kitty's Fishing Trip

Kitty and me set sail on the sea.
Our boat was small, not big at all.
'Twas a lovely blue, just right for two.
The sea was calm, so there'd be no harm,
In a fishing trip on our small ship.
As we sailed along, the winds got strong.
We rocked and swayed and were delayed,
As the waves mounted, the cost was counted.
Kitty meowed, " We're going down now!"
We were at the brink; I thought we'd sink.
Kitty cried, "I don't want to die!
I was just wishing to go fishing!
Now I've lost my pole and next my soul!"
I smiled and said, "Fear not, we're not dead.
On the tide, we'll make the other side."
Kitty wailed, "I wish I hadn't sailed!"
The winds died down, so we didn't drown.
We made it to the shore to sail no more.
When Kitty wants fish, it'll be on a dish.

Easter Bunny Limericks

There was an Easter Bunny named Fred.

He pooped colored eggs from his head.

He did not like eggs of pink.

He said that candy eggs stink.

He pooped his brains out and now he is dead.

There was an Easter bunny named Sheila.

She was a genuine wheeler and dealer.

She traded eggs for dough,

And cheated from the word go,

She wound up in jail because of a squealer.

There was an Easter Bunny named Thor.

He bought all his colored eggs from the store.

He couldn’t buy very many,

With a dime and a penny,

So he took out a loan and bought them galore.

There was an Easter Bunny named Max.

He carried his Easter eggs in two sacks.

He hid the eggs here.

He hid the eggs there,

But mostly he would rather play jacks.

There was an Easter Bunny named Larry.

He was big and mean and ugly and hairy.

He wouldn’t leave any eggs.

He hopped off on his legs,

And returned after midnight just to be scary.

A Tanka: Close Your Eyes

                    the stillness of night
           brings dreams of fantastic sights
                    behind closed eyelids
               float planets comets and stars
                 I drift through the universe

The Wise Old Crow

An old crow sat on a fencepost,

Eyeing the corn and the scarecrow.

The wind made his arms flap the most.

Mr. Crow knew what to bestow.

He flew away to find some rope,

And tied the scarecrow to a tree.

He thought the scarecrow was a dope,

And went to the garden to see,

If juicy young corn plants were up.

He worked hard and pulled them out.

He relished each kernel and supped,

While the scarecrow sat in a pout.

Haiku String: Red Squirrel King

Snow falls in the glade
A squirrel chatters and chides
From a nearby tree

He demands to know
What trespasser dares enter
The woods that he owns

He throws acorns down
At the human invader
Driving him away

He claps tiny hands
And chatters in victory
The human retreats

The clearing is his
And his alone once again
He is its monarch

The Real Scoop

There once were these people called Mayans,
Who predicted in 2012 we’ll be dyin’,
But guess what; big surprise,
They couldn’t  foretell their own demise,
But let’s give ‘em an A just for tryin’.

Limerick

Once upon a dog sat a flea.
He said,” Take a look at me.”
The dog scratched him away,
But he came back the next day,
And brought a friend along for tea.
